Can God Protect us From Nukes?

An In-Depth Examination of the Morality of Preemptive War

Author’s note: The propaganda required to motivate nations to war one against another is full of lies and inspires hate. I hope that as you personally explore our situation that you will seek council from the scriptures and from the Lord directly through the Holy Ghost. The spirit of contention is not from God. As it says in Ecclesiastes, there is a time and a season for war. If we get this right it will help us avoid being stained by the blood and sins of this generation.

This is the fifth article in a series of seven.

Part 5 – Modern Weapons, Modern Media & Terrorism

Should the threat of weapons of mass destruction change our principles?

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.

Frank Herbert, Dune 1965

As previously discussed, we as a nation changed our principles after 9/11/2001. The stated reason was the idea that rogue and unpredictable despots or secretive groups will unleash a nuclear weapon or other unfathomable evil upon us if we do not take preemptive action. The purpose of this article is to address the nature of the threat, our unreliable sources of information, and the irrationality of our fears.

Fear IS the mind killer. The goal of terrorism is to create fear to induce a reaction. So what then is the reaction that they seek? The most common terrorism we have seen in the past 50 years is related to the volatile situation in the Middle East. Here are the two sides. We are told that the Muslims want the Jews and the US to leave them alone. On the other hand, the Jews want to maintain control of Israel. (This is an obviously complex subject and would merit much more examination. The fact remains that prior to this last century the Jews and Muslims had cohabited peacefully for the most part.) We should ask ourselves why these radical Islamists continue to use terrorism when it is obviously not working and never really has. It has only caused more poverty and destruction in their own lands. Recent history proves that the peaceful examples of Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela work far better against the Western powers.

We must also consider the irrationality of the terrorists and their inconsistency. Considering their supposed goals and the porous US / Mexican border, these terrorists are not very smart. There’s a litany of ideas that the purported masterminds would have considered. For example: bombing the power lines that feed California in the vast Southwest. Armed squad sized attacks on elementary schools. Regular sniper attacks. Perhaps “Skype” bomb threats on a regular basis. They wouldn’t even have to leave home. These terrorists could bring the US to its knees logistically, but they don’t.

It is a little known fact that you are more likely to die by a bee sting, than at the hands of a terrorist. If we were to base our actions on per-capita deaths, we should be warring against driving automobiles, heart disease, malpractice of doctors etc. but not against bees and terrorists. Another good example is shark attacks. Anytime someone gets bitten by a shark it makes the news. It induces fear. It sells advertising. Still it would be irrational to declare war on sharks and bees.

There are multiple levels to the modern media deception. Controversy is its own coinage. (Glenn Beck) Fear and conflict sells advertising. So right off the bat all media should be distrusted simply because of its obvious profit motive. This is especially critical when dealing with such serious matters as war. But war is a money maker in a much larger way than advertising. General Electric, who owns (but is divesting) NBC, has a very large stake in the manufacturing of weapons systems and related parts. Additionally the company received millions (perhaps billions) in “stimulus” payments from the Obama administration. So there are obvious political connections as well. GE is only one of the octopuses of media conglomerates. In the US almost all mainstream media is controlled by one of five media corporations. They all have political connections and conflicts of interest. And due to the assembly line nature of news production, many of these outfits don’t always do their own reporting. For example, some stories are originated by Reuters or Associated Press and then passed from national to regional to local stations where actors read from teleprompters to program the public mind via the evening news.

To illustrate the problem let us examine one of the main “evidences” used to justify attacking Iran. I enjoy checking headlines on Drudge links to a wide variety of generally conservative leaning sources. Even though I value this site more than others it is still a crapshoot. Just days ago the headline read: AHMADINEJAD: ANNIHILATE ISRAEL... The link was to the Jerusalem Post. The article quotes Ahmadinejad saying, “Anyone who loves freedom and justice must strive for the annihilation of the Zionist regime in order to pave the way for world justice and freedom.”Ahmadinejad has previously called for Israel's annihilation, in a 2005 speech in which he used a Persian phrase that translates literally as “wiped off the page of time.” Those are strong words, “annihilation” and “wiped off the page of time.”

The Jerusalem Post is getting a lot of mileage out of that one comment. In fact the entire Military-Industrial-Media complex is getting a lot of mileage out of it. The 2005 speech is a key source supporting the US and Israeli governments’ case that we are in jeopardy. It is the basis of the “imminent threat” in their eyes. The Atlantic Wire published a good article demonstrating how foolhardy (or manipulative) this thought process is.

Quote: Steele claims that the "page of time" phrase, along with the rest of his translation, suggests that the Iranian president was expressing a desire for an end to Israeli occupation at some point in the future. "He was not threatening an Iranian-initiated war to remove Israeli control over Jerusalem," Steele writes. So there you have it. Depending on who you ask, Ahmadinejad was either endorsing Khomeini's battle cry for Israel to be wiped off the map or invoking Khomeini's wish that, someday, somehow, the Israeli government will collapse under its own weight.

There is also more discussion to be had surrounding the context of the use of the word “annihilation.” In context he is calling for regime change, something our leaders are apt to do quite often. Unfortunately here in America the prevailing sound byte teaches us that Ahmadinejad has a death wish for himself and his nation and he wishes to annihilate the Israeli people, not get rid of their corrupted government.

I think that most people distrust media on a significant level, yet we still tend to gravitate to those sources that most often say what we want to hear. If we lean right there are many options, if we lean left media has that too and in spades. Due to the amount of corruption involved, we really should distrust all of it. The adversary has been highly successful in embedding evil into both the mainstream liberal and conservative worldviews. If we pick either one, we are damned. It is an expert gambit Lucifer has played.

We ought to liken the scriptures to ourselves. Our modern media machine is a beast the likes of which the world has never seen. A solid comparison is that of Lehi’s dream. (1 Nephi chapters 8 and 11-14) In a 2006 talk entitled Lehi’s Dream and You, Elder Boyd K. Packer explained, “Largely because of television, instead of looking over into that spacious building, we are, in effect, living inside of it. That is your fate in this generation. You are living in that great and spacious building.” The mists of darkness are swirling around the globe obscuring truth and funneling men onto diverse paths and into the spacious building, largely due to modern media.

The Lamanites faced similar propaganda problems when Amalickiah usurped the kingship. Although less insidious and complex, their equivalent was the men on the towers who stirred up the people to war.

Alma 48:1 And now it came to pass that, as soon as Amalickiah had obtained the kingdom he began to inspire the hearts of the Lamanites against the people of Nephi; yea, he did appoint men to speak unto the Lamanites from their towers, against the Nephites.

2 And thus he did inspire their hearts against the Nephites, insomuch that in the latter end of the nineteenth year of the reign of the judges, he having accomplished his designs thus far, yea, having been made king over the Lamanites, he sought also to reign over all the land, yea, and all the people who were in the land, the Nephites as well as the Lamanites.

Therefore he had accomplished his design, for he had hardened the hearts of the Lamanites and blinded their minds, and stirred them up to anger, insomuch that he had gathered together a numerous host to go to battle against the Nephites.

In another symbolic proclamation Elder Packer indicated that our youth have been “raised in enemy territory.” (General Conference Oct. 2011) I’ve written extensively about Amalickiah’s activities among the Lamanites in an article entitled Amalickiah: The Model Scheming Leader.

Enter WMD. Modern media has the public convinced that terrorists will obtain and use WMD. WMD is the Pavlovian prompt, the hypnotist’s pocket-watch if you will. In society it elicits an almost “programmed” response. It has been a theme in movies for decades. It is most definitely a sobering thought. But any nation possessing WMD might use WMD. Yet we do not attack them. Historically we have held back even when faced with the most evil of dictators such as Stalin and Mao.

Biological warfare is another hot topic. It is a valid concern also but it should not lead us to unjust and irrational action. We face many threats living in this world.  Pharmaceutical companies could accidentally unleash a plague upon us. CERN (European Laboratory for Particle Physics) might accidentally create a black hole and disintegrate the earth. These are all possibilities but do not merit irrational response. Even if any of these events did occur, they do not merit abandoning our moral principles. They do not merit abandoning our God given rights and liberties.

The mainstream mind has been killed by fear. The truth is that modern media has sold us a bill of goods. The goal of terrorism is not what is commonly believed by the mainstream. The terrorists of 9/11/2001 achieved their goals. Look back at the last 11 years and honestly admit what we have sacrificed. Look at what we have done to ourselves and others; all due to fear and a desire for revenge. Our national debts have skyrocketed. We have invaded many sovereign nations. We have shredded the Bill of Rights. We have unleashed a police state upon ourselves. We created the conditions where an openly socialistic malefactor gained the Presidency. Worse is to come.

As we previously discussed, James Madison’s warning should be ringing in our ears. “No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare.” Madison reveals that war is the most effective tool of any oligarchy seeking for more power. Because we failed to stick to principle as a nation, we are being enslaved by our own actions. Those who finance and perpetrate terrorism know full well what reaction they seek. They seek conflict and war. This allows men working in darkness to gain unimaginable wealth and power (control, dominion). Moses 6:15 explains that this has been the human condition from the beginning. “And in those days Satan had great dominion among men, and raged in their hearts; and from thenceforth came wars and bloodshed; and a man’s hand was against his own brother, in administering death, because of secret works, seeking for power.

Palms 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Please do not succumb to the fear based media of our day. Those who have read the Book of Mormon should know where to look for their salvation. Please prayerfully consider these concepts as you examine the world we live in.
